Root Amputation/Root Resection

In certain multi-rooted teeth, disease or damage may significantly affect one root while the remaining roots and supporting tooth structure are healthy enough to preserve. In selected cases, root amputation, also known as root resection, may provide an alternative to removing the entire tooth.

Root amputation involves surgically removing the affected root while preserving the healthy portion of the tooth and its remaining roots.

This specialized procedure may be considered when one root has significant infection, bone loss, structural damage, resorption, or another localized problem that cannot be predictably treated with conventional root canal therapy alone.

Before recommending root resection, our endodontist performs a comprehensive evaluation to assess the tooth, surrounding bone, periodontal support, and remaining root structure. Cone Beam CT (CBCT) imaging may also be used when indicated to provide a detailed three-dimensional view of the area.

Because not every tooth is a candidate for root amputation, treatment recommendations are made on an individual basis. When appropriate, the goal is to remove the diseased portion while preserving as much of the natural tooth as possible.
