Management of Internal and External Root Resorption

Root resorption is a condition in which the body’s own cells begin to break down and remove portions of a tooth’s root structure. It can occur internally within the root canal system or externally along the surface of the root.

 

Internal root resorption begins inside the tooth and may progressively weaken the internal tooth structure. External root resorption develops on the outside surface of the root and can have several causes, including dental trauma, infection, orthodontic movement, or other factors.

 

Because root resorption may not cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages, it is often discovered during a dental examination or through imaging.

 

Accurate diagnosis is particularly important when determining the location and extent of resorption. Cone Beam CT (CBCT) imaging, when indicated, can provide a detailed three-dimensional view of the tooth and surrounding structures, helping our endodontist evaluate the condition and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

 

Treatment varies depending on the type, location, severity, and progression of the resorption and may include root canal therapy, surgical treatment, repair of the affected area, or careful monitoring.

 

Early diagnosis and appropriate management may improve the opportunity to preserve the natural tooth.
